Is one of the last story mods for Fallout: New Vegas to arrive before Fallout 4. It’s a DLC-sized adventure that adds a new location to the Mojave, and asks players to solve a century-old murder. We spoke with Guillaume Veer, the lead designer on the mod, about the unusual themes explored in his story, and about how the sudden announcement of Fallout 4 affected his development cycle.The new location is a hidden library in a Vault-like base where pre-war knowledge has been kept safe for centuries. Veer described the experience he wanted players to have, “I wanted the player to be left alone on all the issues raised by Autumn Leaves. Among them is Fallout 4’s dialog system, which limits players to selecting from four dialog options, but only gives players hints about what their character will actually say. “I didn’t have the heart to trim down all of the rather complex dialogue trees I made for Autumn Leaves in order to make them fit into Fallout 4’s dialogue wheel,” Veer said. “Autumn Leaves was intended to be very extensive when it comes to player choices and I think that four-slots dialogue wheel wouldn’t go well with that. Dialogue wheels are made to provide some kind of cinematic experience, a quick back-and-forth with the NPCs, while Autumn Leaves is more introspective in its nature, better fitted for first-person dialog. Moreover, you can’t have the same intimacy with your character when you actually see him or her delivering your ‘own’ line. At least, that’s how I feel.”.

Autumn Leaves is available now for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas, but Veer was so inspired by the experience of making this mod that he is considering a stand-alone version of it that could be played without needing a copy of New Vegas. He left us with the following advice for other would-be game makers, “Do things that are very personal and important to you: you have something only you have to say, and the world will be a better place if you do. Other than that, have fun doing what you’re doing and always listen to your players’ feedback: as harsh as they can be, they’re the ones that will help you getting better.”.
